Will Orlando Pirates win PSL title? Pitso Mosimane responds

Former Mamelosi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane feels it is still too early to predict if Orlando Pirates will win the PSL title.

Pirates are the form team this season as they have ended the year top of the table with 28 points from 12 matches, two more than champions Sundowns, who have played a game more.

Abdeslam Ouaddou’s team have been untouchable as they have remained unbeaten in their last 10 games, winning nine and drawing one, having started the season with back-to-back losses. This at a time when Sundowns have dropped 13 points from as many games.

Mosimane not picking title favourites yet

Pirates have also benefited from strength in depth with Ouaddou able to shuffle his pack with ease and still get the same level of performances, earning praise from Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso.

That has seen the Buccaneers touted as the team to end Sundowns’ dominance that has seen them win the last eight league titles in a row but Mosimane thinks that kind of talk is premature.

“We [the league] are doing very well. Pirates are doing exceptionally well. Pushing Sundowns, rattling Sundowns a little bit which is what we want,” Mosimane said on SABC TV.

“But it’s a long haul this thing. You can’t say who’s gonna win the league. Sundowns has got a history and experience of going for a very long time, but Pirates says, ‘maybe not this year’.”

Ex-Sundowns coach dominated PSL

Mosimane knows what it takes to win PSL titles as he won five in eight years at Sundowns but had some bruising battles, like in 2014-15 when Kaizer Chiefs pipped his team by 12 points, and in 2016-17 when Bidvest Wits beat the Brazilians to the league crown by just three points.

Pirates and Sundowns will resume their fight for the title in January as the season has taken a break owing to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations but there is also Sekhukhune United, who are three points behind Ouaddou’s team, while Chiefs are four adrift, same as AmaZulu FC.
