Williams stands with Kaizer Chiefs star amid criticism: ‘We keep going! He will reach there again’

Mamelodi Sundowns custodian Ronwen Williams has defended under-fire Kaizer Chiefs skipper Brandon Petersen, at the same time hitting back at critics who have been slamming him for what they feel are poor showings.

The custodian has been on the receiving end of criticism from a section of the Masandawana supporters who feel the Bafana Bafana captain has been conceding soft goals.

It has been the same case for the Glamour Boys skipper Brandon Petersen, who kept 15 clean sheets in the 2025/26 campaign.

On Wednesday, Williams pulled some massive saves to help Masandawana keep a clean sheet in the 2-0 win over newbies Milford FC in the Premier Soccer League outing. The 34-year-old ended up getting the Man of the Match Award with his team hitting 13 points from five outings.

Williams stands with Petersen and other keepers

The Brazilians’ custodian has stood up with the likes of Denis Onyango and Ricardo Goss as well, exuding confidence that they will rise.

“We’ve been winning each and every game, but our department has been getting a lot of criticism because we’ve been conceding a lot of goals,” he told SuperSport TV.

“We know how difficult it is, especially how we want our keepers to play. It can be easy for me to just stand on my line and be a line goalkeeper, but that’s not what is required at a team like Sundowns. So I’m always involved, Ricardo [Goss], all the [keepers]. This is to our department, to Denis [Onyango], Ricardo, to Ree [Petersen], and especially to coach Kennedy.

“The criticism we’ve taken and we just keep going. And not only that, but here also, it’s the whole league. I want Sipho Chaine to keep going, doing his best. Brandon Petersen, he was amazing last season, now he’s going through things, but he will reach there again, and that’s the nature of the beast.

“So I’m proud of all the keepers, and I always encourage them to keep going, and we must keep pushing our position even higher and higher. We changed how goalkeepers are being looked at now and I’m just glad. This is for all the goalkeepers,” he concluded.
