Sparta Prague defender Igoh Ogbu has made an earlier-than-expected comeback following his recent injury, featuring in Slavia Prague's Cup match against SK Benátky nad Jizerou on Wednesday.
Ogbu started the game wearing a protective mask as a precaution. Slavia Prague won 4-1, with the Nigerian defender lasting the full duration.
The 24-year-old, who has been a crucial part of his team’s defense this season, initially raised concerns after going down clutching his face during a Czech Chance Liga match—a 3-0 victory over Viktoria Plzeň in September.
He was stretchered off the field and taken to the hospital for immediate treatment.
The injury was later confirmed as a fractured zygomatic arch, caused by a collision with Viktoria Plzeň’s Jan Kopic and Svetozar Markovic in the penalty area.
While initially suspected to be a head injury, further medical assessments revealed the facial fracture, requiring surgery.
Though early estimates suggested he would be sidelined until the new year, Ogbu has managed to return ahead of schedule, a recovery quicker than the doctors had initially predicted.
Early return for Super Eagles prospect Igoh Ogbu
Reflecting on his swift return, Igoh Ogbu expressed gratitude for his recovery and optimism about contributing to his team’s title ambitions.
He told Afrik-Foot, “I really thank God for healing me. It feels great; it's amazing to be back on the pitch.
“That is what I have been waiting for, to be back on the pitch.
“Thank God I came back earlier than the doctor said I would. Now, it’s left for me to keep building on it to come back even stronger.”
“Being with the squad again is a beautiful feeling, and I am glad to be back earlier than predicted by the doctors.”
Before his injury, Ogbu had made eight league appearances, starting in each game and averaging 82 minutes per match in the Czech First League.
