Calvin Bassey’s journey to the top has been one of resilience and determination. Born in Aosta, Italy to Nigerian parents, he moved to England as a child and grew up in Newham.
His football career started with multiple setbacks as he faced rejections from clubs like Crystal Palace, West Ham, and Charlton Athletic before finally earning a place in Leicester City’s academy at the age of 15.
Despite developing at Leicester, Bassey never made a first-team appearance and moved to Rangers ahead of the 2020/21 season. In Scotland, he established himself as a key player, making 37 appearances before securing a high-profile transfer to Dutch giants Ajax.
His time in Amsterdam lasted just one season before Fulham brought him back to England in the summer of 2023, signing him for €21 million on a four-year deal.
A versatile defender, Bassey is a centre-back who is also comfortable at left-back.
His strength, physicality, and composure on the ball make him one of the most powerful defenders in the Premier League.
Eligible to represent Italy, England, and Nigeria, Bassey committed to the Super Eagles in 2021 but had to wait eight months before making his debut. He finally played his first game in March 2022 during a FIFA World Cup qualifier against Ghana in Accra, which ended in a goalless draw.
Since then, he has earned 29 caps for Nigeria, scoring twice, and continues to be a vital figure in the national team’s defence.
