Former Zimbabwe international and Kaizer Chiefs attacker Brian Abbas Amidu has been sentenced 12 years in preason after being found guilty of drug trafficking.

The 35-year-old was arrested early in October alongside Reuben Kudzai Mhlanga in possession of the illegal stuff.

“The ZRP confirms the arrest of soccer players, Tumai Matsika, also known as Abas Amidu (29) and Reuben Kudzai Mhlanga (41) for drug trafficking,” the Zimbabwe Police reported then.

“The two were found in possession of 750kg of dagga valued at USD75 000-00 in a silver Honda Shuttle vehicle, registration number AGP 6776, along Kwekwe – Kadoma Highway on 03/10/25.

“Meanwhile, the ZRP arrested Prosper Mphofu (48) at Trabablas Interchange after receiving a parcel containing 60kg of dagga worth USD6 000-00 from a certain vehicle,” they concluded.

Ex-Amakhosi forward sent behind bars

On Wednesday, the authorities, through the Police Spokesperson Paul Nyathi, confirmed the ex-player will be in jail for a prolonged time to pay for his crimes.

“The police also confirms the conviction and sentencing of two former soccer players, Tumai Matsika, also known as Abbas Amidu, and Reuben Kudzai Mhlanga, for dealing in dangerous drugs [dagga],” he said in a statement.

“The two appeared in court on 24 February 2026 for sentencing and were each sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment.

“The ZRP applauds members of the public for their continued cooperation and support in the fight against crime, saying community involvement remains critical in combating drug-related offences. The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that crime does not pay,” Nyathi concluded.

Amidu joined the Soweto giants in 2012 as the club saw potential in the then 21-year-old forward.

However, a couple of months later, he was shipped out without making any appearance owing to injuries. The former Black Mambas player was then taken by Leopards where he scored four goals and provided two assists in the slightly more than 20 games featured.

He also served abroad where he had stints in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
