AFCON 2025: Bafana Bafana and Egypt joint top of Group B ahead of showdown

Published on by

Egypt and South Africa sit joint top of Group B after dramatic comeback wins on Matchday 1 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Pharaohs edged Zimbabwe 2–1 thanks to a stoppage-time strike from Mohamed Salah, while Bafana Bafana overcame Angola by the same scoreline, with Lyle Foster netting the winner late in the second half.

“We got some things right during halftime, and I think Moremi also gave us good service. He played very well, was quick and was a threat for the Angola defense. This changed a lot of things,” Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos said in a post match interview.

“We were also more aggressive. We put more pressure on the opponent. We had some chances and even got a goal from Moremi. But okay, it was offside.”

Bafana Bafana play their next match against Egypt on Friday, while group rivals Zimbabwe face Angola in the other match.
