AFCON: Broos addresses alleged Pirates/Sundowns division at Bafana Bafana

For the last couple of years, Premier Soccer League champions Mamelodi Sundowns have been dominating Bafana Bafana.

However, in the South Africa squad that is in Morocco for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Soweto giants have produced nine players as opposed to Masandawana who have managed just five.

Rumours have it that there has been club rivalry in camp while, back at home, the fans keep arguing about players who are making an impact for the national team, depending with the team’s they are representing back in Mzansi.

Nevertheless, coach Hugo Broos has refuted those speculations as he hopes to guide the team to continental glory.

No Sundowns, no Pirates or whatever

“You know in the team there is no Sundowns or Pirates or whatever. But what makes us so strong I have said it already in the past, this is a big family,” Broos told the media ahead of Group B AFCON meeting against seven-time champions Egypt.

“And not only the players, not only the technical staff but everyone who is part of the delegation is working towards one goal and that is to prepare for the games as good as possible and to win every game we play.

“So I don’t see Pirates players alone or Sundowns players alone, they are setting together on the table, they are making noise they are making the jokes there is no difference, not at all.

“This is again one of the important things that make South Africa so strong for the moment,” the tactician concluded.
