South Africa captain Ronwen Williams has lauded Uganda legend Denis Onyango for the role he played in shaping him up.

While the 39-year-old Onyango is close to calling it a day, Williams is at his peak for both Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana. The two great keepers met at SuperSport United, before being re-united at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Williams, who was in goal as Onyango's Cranes suffered a 2-0 loss on Friday in Group K's 2025 Afcon qualifier, has now shared in public the relationship they share both on and off the pitch.

“I met Denis I think 16 years ago when I was from the SuperSport United academy and he welcomed me with open hands into the first team,” the 32-year-old told the media.

I help Onyango, he helps me – Williams

Denis Onyango Mamelodi Sundowns

“Onyango has been there for me and I always watched him from afar when he moved to Mamelodi Sundowns. I watched him do amazing work and even at Afcon 2019, he did amazing things for Uganda.

“When I joined Sundowns, he welcomed me with open arms. We don’t have competition, we are brothers. He is like a big brother to me. I help him, he helps me and he is a wonderful human being.  That is why he has achieved so much because he is such a good guy always ready to help, he is a leader, a captain, he is a father, and is a big brother to all of us and he is an inspiration to us as goalkeepers.

“He has won the league 11 times and that is amazing and to see him at his age still working hard to play and hope his good attributes can wrap over me.”
