Kaizer Chiefs earn high praise over ‘wise’ transfer decision

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Mokete Tsotetsi has endorsed the club’s decision to keep striker Khanyisa Mayo for the upcoming season, expressing confidence that the forward will repay the faith shown in him.

Mayo has been retained by Amakhosi following a challenging loan spell from Algerian side CR Belouizdad. The former Cape Town City star struggled for consistent playing time and failed to find his goal-scoring form last season, netting just once in 15 games.

Despite these difficulties, the club has granted Mayo another chance to establish himself, having made his move permanent. Tsotetsi believes this is a wise move and has urged the player to seize the opportunity.

Chiefs lauded over striker’s new deal

“They’ve made a good decision,” Tsotetsi told Soccer Laduma. “Yes, he didn’t do so well last season, but they still believe in him and that he can still give more. It shows that they believe in him, and the player must repay the confidence that has been shown in him.”

Tsotetsi emphasised Mayo’s potential and predicted a stronger performance in the new campaign, especially with a new coach at the helm.

“He should give his best because there is a lot of potential in him. I believe he can do much better in the coming season because he is a quality player,” he added.

“The team has shown that they have confidence in him, despite not having a good season. With the new coach at the club, it will boost his confidence more. I am sure he will work hard to play regularly.”

Surgery to delay Mayo’s season start

Kaizer Chiefs are currently in Spain for their pre-season preparations and have so far recorded back-to-back draws against Spanish side Elche and Saudi club Al Kholood.

However, Mayo is not part of the squad in Spain as he remained behind to recover from a hernia surgery with his estimated return being after two months.

That is another setback somewhat for both player and club as he will not get the chance to showcase his qualities from the start of the season with Amakhosi scheduled to kick off their Premier Soccer League season with a clash against newly-promoted Kruger United.
