Bafana coach Broos welcomes Tau’s move to Qatar – ‘It’s a good thing for him’

South Africa coach Hugo Broos is optimistic Bafana Bafana vice-captain Percy Tau will get time to re-discover his form.

The 30-year-old struggled for game-time in Egypt while turning out for Al Ahly, before Qatar SC came for his services. His move to the Qatar Stars League has been welcome by many since they believe the Lion of Judah can still deliver for the national team in the high-profile matches and competitions.

Tau was excluded from the recent Bafana games owing to his struggle to command a starting berth while at the Red Devils. Coach Broos asked the versatile attacker to consider getting a new team, and after securing a new team, the Belgian is confident of getting his player in good shape as anticipated.

“I was happy that he left Al Ahly because the last time he came in [for camp] it’s a good thing for him,” the 72-year-old told the media.

“Okay we will see what happens with him there in Qatar, I don’t think it’s such a big difference in the level of Qatar and the Egyptian League. Okay, Egypt is better okay, but the important thing is for him to play [regularly].

“It’s something he wasn’t doing for a year, either injured or on the bench, the coach didn’t [start him], so I am happy he changed teams, and let’s hope he plays more now,” he concluded.

It is interesting to see whether Broos will consider Tau in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers scheduled for March.
