Bafana defender completes dream move to Scottish giants Rangers

Scottish giants Rangers have officially announced the signing of Bafana Bafana defender Olwethu Makhanya, securing him on a four-year contract with an option for a fifth season.

The 22-year-old joins from Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union, becoming manager Derek McInnes’s eighth acquisition of the current transfer window. While the club did not disclose a transfer fee, media reports have suggested the deal is valued at approximately $4.5 million.

Makhanya expressed his excitement about the move, calling it a dream come true.

“I can’t even explain how I am feeling right now. It is honestly a big honour and a huge blessing for me to join such a big club with so much history. I can’t wait to get started,” he said. “For me, it has always been a dream to play football in Europe, ever since I was a kid, so to be here is a dream come true.”

He becomes the fifth South African to sign for the Ibrox club, following in the footsteps of predecessors who have had varied success in Glasgow.

Manager Derek McInnes shared his enthusiasm for the new recruit, highlighting the defender’s potential.

“We’re really pleased to bring Olwethu to the club. He’s a player we have watched closely, and we feel he has all the attributes to make a real impact here, while also continuing to develop his game,” McInnes stated.

“For someone so young, he’s already gained experience in different environments. He is a strong, physical and confident defender, and I look forward to seeing him settle into the squad and show what he is capable of as a Rangers player.”

Rangers will kick off their Scottish Premiership campaign with an away fixture against Dundee United on Friday.
