No margin for error: Bafana prepare for ‘card-happy’ referee in South Korea clash

Published on by

Bafana Bafana players have their work cut out as they will have to be on their best behaviour when they play South Korea due the appointment of a no-nonsense referee for the match.

Argentine referee Facundo Tello, known for his strict disciplinary record, has been appointed to oversee South Africa’s critical Group A match against South Korea, a fixture Hugo Broos’ men must win to keep their tournament hopes alive.

The 44-year-old is among the most seasoned officials at the World Cup. He has already refereed the Group B opener between Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he issued five yellow cards.

Which are Tello’s card-filled matches?

Tello’s extensive experience includes officiating at UEFA Euro 2024 and a memorable match at the Qatar 2022 World Cup, where he was in charge of South Korea’s stunning 2-1 comeback victory over Portugal.

However, his reputation for being a no-nonsense referee was cemented during a chaotic Argentine Champions Trophy final in November 2022. In the match between Boca Juniors and Racing Club, Tello showed an astonishing 10 red cards.

The dismissals—seven for Boca Juniors and three for Racing Club—followed widespread altercations sparked by an extra-time winner from Carlos Alcaraz. The game was ultimately abandoned as Boca Juniors did not have enough players left on the field to continue.

Bafana players have work cut out

The appointment may be a cause for concern for Bafana Bafana, who have struggled with discipline in this tournament, receiving two red cards in their opening loss to Mexico.

Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were sent off against Mexico while Teboho Mokoena is suspended for Thursday’s clash after back-to-back yellow cards.

With a spot in the knockout stages at stake, Broos’s team will need to maintain their composure under the watch of an official who is unlikely to tolerate any infractions.

Midfielder Thalente Mbatha also heads into the match on a yellow card and if he is booked by Tello, he will miss the Round of 32 match if South Africa make it that far.
