Bafana’s World Cup preparations disrupted as visa hitch delays Mexico trip

Published on by

Bafana Bafana have seen their final preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup thrown into disarray after visa complications forced the postponement of their flight to Mexico.

The squad was originally scheduled to depart on Sunday to begin acclimatising ahead of their opening match against the host nation on June 11. However, reports indicate that the majority of the team and technical staff are still awaiting their travel documents.

It is understood that head coach Hugo Broos is currently the only member of the travelling party who has successfully secured a visa. This unforeseen delay threatens to disrupt the team’s crucial pre-tournament plans, which included a 10-day high-altitude training camp designed to help the players adjust to the conditions in Mexico.

The disruption could also affect a scheduled warm-up friendly against Jamaica, a fixture considered vital for Broos to finalise his strategy and team selection before the tournament kicks off.

News of the administrative blunder has sparked frustration and anger among South African football supporters, with many voicing their disappointment on social media.

A significant portion of the criticism has been aimed at team manager Vincent Tseka, with fans questioning the handling of the visa application process so close to the World Cup.

Broos’ team is scheduled to play Jamaica in Pachuca, Mexico on June 5 in what will be their final match before their World Cup opener with co-hosts Mexico on June 11.

Further delays could complicate their preparations further and deny Broos the time he needs to tune his players for the tournament.

South Africa will also play Czech Republic and South Korea in their World Cup group.
