Baloyi faults Chiefs on Zungu case – ‘For Amakhosi to thrive you need big names’

The 32-year-old midfielder has been a free agent since the end of the 2023/24 season when he left Mamelodi Sundowns. The experienced versatile player had helped Masandawana win two Premier Soccer League titles and the African Football League during the two seasons he was at the club.

After leaving Downs, Zungu was linked to many teams, but it was Kaizer Chiefs and Rulani Mokwena's Wydad Athletic Club who were seen as the front runners for the player's signature.

However, none of the reported moves materialised; recently, Zungu was signed by AmaZulu, co-coached by former Amakhosi Arthur Zwane and Vusumuzi Vilakazi.

 Why didn't Chiefs sign him?

It is a move that did not go down well with Baloyi who insists Zungu was the man to help stabilize Chiefs' midfield that is largely dominated by inexperienced youngsters.

“I've said it in the last six months, that's the type of player Chiefs should have signed. I don't know what they are thinking. When you're looking at the young players they have, you need to blend experience with youth,” he told Metro FM Sports.

“A lot of those youngsters can learn from Bongani and not only that, there's still a lot that he can give. Look at the Bongani now, Rulani even sometimes played him in defence. It shows you he has evolved to become a better player, defensively as well. That's the type of player you need.

“At Chiefs, you need big players, big characters, big-name players. For Chiefs to thrive, you need no less than five big name players,” he concluded.

Under coach Nasreddine Nabi, Chiefs have three Premier Soccer League wins, as many draws and three defeats as well.
