Bongani Zungu & Sandile Mthethwa sign for PSL club

Bongani Zungu has finally landed a new club following his unveiling at AmaZulu on Monday.

Zungu has been without a club since leaving Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of last season with a number of clubs linked to him, but a deal did not materialise.

One club that was heavily linked are Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club, currently coached by Zungu’s former Sundowns mentor Rulani Mokwena, but the two parties could not agree despite training with the team.

Usuthu have now won the race for his signature, signing a permanent deal, as the club looks to improve in the second half of the season following their difficult start to the campaign.

Zungu targeting trophies with Usuthu

“My personal goal is to help the team climb as high as possible on the log table, assist the younger players, and bring my experience to the squad,” said Zungu, expressing a desire to win silverware at the club.

“Everywhere I’ve played, I’ve managed to win trophies, and I want to bring that same winning mentality here. I know what it takes to win, and that’s my aim.

“I’m also thrilled to be coached by Arthur Zwane and Vusi Vilakazi. I’ve watched AmaZulu’s games, and the team plays the modern game. My understanding of the game will help the team, but I know I have to work hard to earn my place.”

Zungu played at Sundowns for two years before he left at the end of last season, having made 30 appearances in 2023-24.

The 32-year-old will add experience to the AmaZulu squad with the club also completing the signing of defender Sandile Mthethwa, who left Orlando Pirates last week.

“I will do everything within my power to make my mark in the history of AmaZulu, lift my family name, and help the club return to the top four,” Mthethwa said following his signing.

“I’m thankful to AmaZulu for believing in me. I’ve heard there were previous attempts to sign me, and now that I’m here, I want to show my appreciation through hard work on the pitch.

“This club is close to my heart—it’s just two hours away from my hometown, Empangeni—so I feel at home already. I know the journey ahead won’t be easy, but I promise to give my all for this badge.”
