Ben Youssef reacts to Mayo’s costly blunder in Chiefs draw with AmaZulu

Kaizer Chiefs drew 1-1 with AmaZulu in the Premier Soccer League game staged at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.

Amakhosi came into the match hoping to bounce back from a three-match winless run in the South African top tier.

The visitors took a lead courtesy of Thandolwenkosi Methuseli Ngwenya, who headed in a cross from the left before Amakhosi got a chance to equalise through a penalty after a defender handled the ball in the danger zone.

However, Glody Lilepo's effort was saved by Darren Johnson.  Nevertheless, Mduduzi Shabalala made it 1-1 with a well-taken strike; Pule Mmodi thought he had won it moments later, but out of nowhere, Khanyisa Mayo, who was in an offside position, decided to touch a goal-bound effort, and the strike was cancelled.

Chiefs deserved to win

In his post-match interview, assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef believes the Glamour Boys deserved maximum points. He has further commented on Mayo's action, which denied Amakhosi maximum points.

“What can I say? In the first 30 minutes of the first half, we created a minimum of four chances to score, but then we conceded a goal where we didn’t concentrate and weren’t focused on small details,” he told the media.

“It’s very tough for the players, mentally, when you have a penalty and miss a penalty, but we continue to fight, we score the goal by Shabalala. Then we get another opportunity, we score, it would’ve been a goal, [but] Mayo touched the ball in offside.

“In the second half, I think we deserved to win, we deserved three points. I feel happy about the performance; the result will come with time,” Ben Youssef concluded.

Chiefs are placed fifth on the table with 15 points from eight matches, where they have collected four wins, three draws, and a loss.
