Benni McCarthy explains Sundowns’ formula that has left Chiefs and Pirates behind

Bafana Bafana legend feels it would take a lot of time and big spending for other teams to catch and overtake Mamelodi Sundowns.

Sundowns have been the dominant team in the Premier Soccer League, winning the last eight straight PSL crowns, and are in the running for a ninth on the bounce this term.

The Brazilians have remained ahead of their rivals Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs due to the deep pockets of club owner Patrice Motsepe, which has allowed them to spend big by buying players from South America and Europe, while luring every available best talent in South Africa.

McCarthy says that, added to the astute management of those running the club, makes it difficult for the rest to compete although he is thrilled that Pirates are going toe-to-toe with Bafana ba Style this season.

“We see now Pirates are flying and Sundowns just have a formula, they have done a lot of things right,” McCarthy said on SuperSport TV.

“Dr Patrice Motsepe when he came in, he raised the bar and management has followed ever since. Right recruitment, spend the money and achieve. Sundowns is difficult to break that cycle but I think Pirates every step they take is all in the right direction and they are finally almost where they need to be.”

McCarthy hopes Pirates, who enjoy a one-point lead over Sundowns in the title race, can sustain their title challenge and end Masandawana’s dominance for a change in the league.

“It would be nice if there is a different winner because it makes the league interesting,” he added. “Sundowns have dominated the last 10 years because the management, recruitment, the coaches they have had and people managing the club are doing the right things year in year out and now, it is for everyone to follow and Pirates have followed suit which is great,” he added.

Sundowns have a chance to move two points clear of Pirates if they can beat Marumo Gallants in their PSL match on Tuesday night.
