Benni McCarthy has revealed that Manchester United were interested in signing Borussia Dortmund star Karim Adeyemi before they shelved the plans.
Adeyemi was the star of the show on Tuesday when he scored a first half hat-trick as Dortmund thrashed Celtic 7-1 in the Champions League to put the rest of Europe on alert.
McCarthy, who worked at United as their attacking coach for the last two seasons, feels United will now face competition for the signature of the 22-year-old now that his stock keeps rising.
When did Man United want to sign Adeyemi?
“I know Manchester United he was on our radar,” McCarthy told SuperSport TV on Tuesday while working as a pundit on Champions League matches.
“He was one of the players that we could possibly bring in the January transfer window but after this performance, they probably don’t want to wait any longer because teams like Bayern could also be on the hunt. Man City could also look at the possibility of a player like that.
“He can play left full-back and you could see going forward his powers when he plays higher up the pitch and he is not shy to have a pop and go.”
Dortmund put Celtic to the sword on Tuesday
Adeyemi is one of the biggest young prospects in Europe and has been at Dortmund since joining in 2022 from Austria’s RB Salzburg.
The winger completed his hat-trick inside the first 42 minutes, with Emre Can and Serhou Guirassy’s penalties giving Dortmund a 5-1 lead at halftime, before the German side completed the rout in the second half.
