Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy will take home nearly R1.5 million in monthly salary during his stint as coach of the Kenya national team.
McCarthy was unveiled as Harambee Stars coach on Monday and it was revealed that he will be in charge for two years until the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host with neighbouring nations Tanzania and Uganda.
His employers Football Kenya Federation said his package will include performance-based bonuses if he archives certain objectives.
McCarthy will pocket big bonuses

“The contract rewards the technical bench with every good performance. We believe we have put together the right technical bench. The performance reward system, being KPI for the coaches, and the entire technical bench, and their term is up to AFCON 2027,” said the federation’s president Hussein Mohammed said during his unveiling.
It has now been revealed that South Africa’s leading scorer will pocket Ksh8 million (R1.48 million) per month in salary and bonuses during his two-year stint in East Africa.
McCarthy’s pay package includes a guaranteed monthly salary plus bonuses, based on how Harambee Stars perform, beginning with the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against the Gambia and Gabon on March 17 and 24 respectively.
Kenya lie fourth on their World Cup qualification group with five points below leaders Ivory Coast, who have 10 points, Gabon on nine, and East African rivals Burundi, on seven points, with six matches remaining.
How does Benni’s pay compare to Broos’?

If McCarthy manages to qualify for the World Cup as he has promised, he will be guaranteed hefty bonuses and the same will apply if he leads Kenya to the latter stages of the 2024 African Nations Championships as well as AFCON 2027 which the country will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.
The amount makes McCarthy one of the top earning coaches in Africa and his salary slightly dwarfs that of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, who is on R1.4 million per month.
Algeria’s Bosnian coach Vladimir Petkovic is believed to be the highest paid national team coach in Africa, on a monthly salary of €135,000 ( R2.5 million).
