Benni regrets missing Chiefs & Pirates coaching jobs

South Africa legend Benni McCarthy has revealed he was looking forward to coaching either Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates but did not get that chance.

The Buccaneers appointed Jose Riveiro as their head coach at the beginning of the 2022/23 season. The Spaniard had taken over from Mandla Ncikazi who was coaching the team alongside Fadlu Davids. Despite his availability, McCarthy did not get the chance.

Last season, Chiefs finished 10th in the Premier Soccer League, and massive changes were made in the technical bench. McCarthy – who had parted ways with Manchester United as their strikers' coach, was tipped to take over, but again, it was Tunisian Nasreddine Nabi who was given the chance.

“After coach Gavin Hunt left Kaizer Chiefs, there was a possibility that I could have gotten the job, but never did just before coach Nabi, there was an opportunity. There was a cry from everybody, but I never got it because for whatever reason,” he told MSW.

“I played there at Pirates. Before coach Jose Riveiro came. There was an opportunity, you know, I was doing exceptionally well with probably one of the least (expected) teams that people expect for you to do what you do, AmaZulu. There would have been a possibility to go there, [it] didn't happen. Why not? Because exactly, that's just a trend.

It is interesting to see which team will eventually give McCarthy a chance to coach.
