Betway Premiership: Relegation Battle Drama

Published on by

The fight to avoid relegation in the 2024/25 Betway Premiership was incredibly intense and unpredictable, as many clubs found themselves involved, with their fortunes changing constantly from one week to the next.

Royal AM, having been expelled from the league, was effectively treated as a relegated team. The final day of the season then confirmed the Playoffs spot, adding last-minute drama to the standings.

Here’s a look at clubs that were involved in relegation:

  • Marumo Gallants

In the middle of the season, Bahlabane Ba Ntwa were perceived as one of the clubs that would find it difficult to retain their top-flight status this season.

However, they quickly made coaching changes, sacking Dan Malesela and appointing the Moroccan coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, who was successful in moving the club away from the drop zone.

They ended the season in 10th position in the standings with 32 points after 28 matches.

  • Magesi

After an initial high of winning the Carling Knockout Cup, the Limpopo outfit's debut season took a difficult turn in the first half, as they struggled to achieve consistent results.

This challenging period led to a significant coaching change, seeing Clinton Larsen depart and Owen Da Gama appointed to rescue the team from a precarious position, a mission he ultimately fulfilled.

This season proved to be an unprecedented experience for Matsatsantsa, as they found themselves unexpectedly drawn into a relegation battle, a situation entirely new to the club.

Despite making a coaching change by sacking Gavin Hunt, their difficulties persisted. Ultimately, they managed to dodge the dreaded Playoffs spot, securing their safety.

  • Cape Town City

Cape Town City face a crucial battle to retain their top-flight status, as they are confirmed to participate in the upcoming PSL promotion and relegation playoffs.

Their fate was sealed after being narrowly edged out of the coveted 14th place by SuperSport United, highlighting just how tight the race for survival was in the final stages of the league campaign. The Citizens will now need to dig deep to ensure their continued presence in the Betway Premiership.
