Broos appoints Pirates’ man as his captain ahead of international assignments

Bafana Bafana are among the many nations that will take part in the international friendly matches in the forthcoming FIFA window.

Hugo Broos' men will play Taifa Stars of Tanzania on Friday, June 6, at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. Four days later, South Africa will face fellow Cosafa nation Mozambique in another friendly outing at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday, June 10.

Captain Ronwen Williams and other senior players are not available for the two games, which gave the Belgian a chance to try some new individuals ahead of the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers as well as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

One of the players in Broos' squad is Nkosinathi Sibisi, who has forced his way into the squad after injuries to Masandawana's Mothobi Mvala and Rushwin Dortley of Kaizer Chiefs.

Who will be Bafana Bafana's skipper?

Sibisi played a key role for Orlando Pirates, who went on to win a historic MTN8 threepeat, and reached the Caf Champions League semi-final. The Buccaneers finished second in the Premier Soccer League as well, but failed to win the Nedbank Cup.

The defender did well to create stability at the back, and has since been rewarded for his leadership skills.

“It’s a little bit of a search but I think with Sibisi we have a good captain, he’s an experience player with Bafana Bafana since I am here, from the first day I am here he been with us,” Broos opened up to the media.

“He’s experienced as an older player, he has a guy who has the respect from everybody, so he’s a good one to replace Ronwen,” he concluded.
