Broos slams Pirates & Chiefs for making title race ‘too easy’ for Sundowns

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos does not see Orlando Pirates closing in on Mamelodi Sundowns and winning the PSL title as he feels the race is already over.

Sundowns enjoy an 18-point lead over second-placed Pirates and could take it to 21 if they beat Jose Riveiro’s team in Sunday’s clash at the FNB Stadium.

However, Pirates have four games in hand which if they win, coupled with a victory against Sundowns on Sunday, the difference would be just three points.

Broos, however, does not feel that the Soweto giants have the capacity to claw back such a huge lead and he thinks Sundowns have already sealed an eighth straight PSL title, all down to their superior quality and the struggles of their rivals.

“Sundowns will again be champions with 12-15 points ahead. Kaizer Chiefs are still struggling,” Broos said on SABC.

“Maybe Sundowns will be angry now, but it's too easy for Sundowns to be champions. We are eight games before the end and already they are champions unless they start losing games now. Pirates still have four games but they have to win them. And it will not be easy to win them.”

Broos is saddened to see Sundowns dominate the PSL and hopes to see more teams challenging them next season to make it more competitive.

“I hope next year there will be more fight for the championship with three, four teams fighting for the league. The level will be higher. I hope it happens next year,” he added.

Sundowns have 58 points from 22 matches, having lost two, drawn one and won 19, while Pirates have 40 from 18 games, heading into Sunday’s clash.

The Brazilians have been in great form, winning 12 of their last 14 league matches, a run of form that includes a 4-1 victory over Pirates in February, making them firm favourites to win the league.
