Kaizer Chiefs showed resilience on Saturday as they came from behind to secure their first point in Group D of the CAF Confederation Cup, holding Egyptian giants Zamalek to a dramatic 1-1 draw in added time.
Early Setback and Double Injury Blow
The match got off to a nightmare start for Amakhosi when Zamalek struck in the 3rd minute, capitalizing on a lapse in concentration during a set-piece. Chiefs failed to clear the second ball inside their defensive box, allowing the visitors to take an early lead.
Things went from bad to worse as Chiefs suffered a double injury blow in the first half. Gaston Sirino and Bradley Cross were both forced off, leaving co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef scrambling for solutions.
Solomons the Hero Again
Despite the setbacks, Chiefs kept pushing and were rewarded deep into stoppage time. Dillon Solomons, who has been a standout performer in continental competition, fired a shot that Zamalek’s goalkeeper fumbled, allowing the ball to trickle over the line for the equalizer.
The goal was Solomons’ second in the CAF Confederation Cup, following his strike in last week’s 2-1 defeat to Group D leaders Al Masry. His contributions have been vital in keeping Chiefs’ hopes alive.
Group D Standings: Chiefs Still Chasing
The draw moves Chiefs up to third place in Group D, but they remain five points behind leaders Al Masry, who edged Zesco United in a thrilling 3-2 victory on Friday.
Current Group D table:
- Al Masry – 6 pts
- Zamalek – 4 pts
- Kaizer Chiefs – 1 pt
- Zesco United – 0 pts
What’s Next for Amakhosi?
Chiefs will need to build on this result if they hope to progress from the group. Their next assignment is a must-win clash against winless Zesco United on January 25. Three points in that fixture could keep their knockout stage hopes alive and ease the pressure heading into the second half of the group campaign.
