CAF Makes Major announcement Affecting Sundowns, Chiefs and Stellenbosch

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the Group Stage fixtures for Match Days 3, 4 and 5 in both the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup 2025/26, setting up a decisive stretch that directly impacts South Africa’s three continental representatives: Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, and Stellenbosch FC.

In the Champions League, Mamelodi Sundowns will host Sudan’s Al Hilal at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria on Friday, 23 January. The Brazilians, seasoned campaigners on the continental stage, will be aiming to assert control at the halfway point of the group phase.

Elsewhere, record 12-time champions Al Ahly face Tanzania’s Young Africans in Cairo, while fixtures across Zambia, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Mali will shape the race for quarter-final qualification.

The Confederation Cup brings equal intrigue for South African fans. Kaizer Chiefs travel to Zambia for a crucial clash against ZESCO United on Sunday, 25 January, knowing that victory away from home could be pivotal in their push for quarter-final qualification.

Stellenbosch FC, meanwhile, face a stern test against Algeria’s CR Belouizdad later that evening. Their campaign has taken a dramatic twist following the departure of long-serving coach Steve Barker, who recently joined Tanzanian giantsYoung Africans.

Barker was the architect of Stellenbosch’s rise, guiding them to their first-ever CAF interclub appearance. His move to East Africa leaves Stellies needing to quickly adapt under new leadership while navigating the unforgiving demands of continental competition.

CAF’s announcement means the next three matchdays will be pivotal, with South Africa’s clubs carrying the nation’s hopes in both competitions.

For Sundowns, it is about consolidating their dominance in Africa’s flagship tournament. For Chiefs, it is about reasserting their pedigree on the continental stage. And for Stellenbosch, it is the beginning of a new chapter in the post-Barker era, under the glare of continental football.
