Can Kaizer Chiefs win PSL title? Ex-Amakhosi coach delivers verdict

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Calvin Johnson has commented on the club’s title credentials following their good start to this season.

Chiefs have seen an improvement this season as they sit third on the PSL table with 22 points from 11 games, three behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played one game more and level with Orlando Pirates.

That has got fans believing that Amakhosi can once again challenge for the league title like they used to do in years past but Johnson is sounding a cautious tone.

Johnson weighs in on Amakhosi’s title chances

“They’ve invested a lot in the last two seasons and got rid of a lot of players, it looks like the team is doing well now,” Johnson told Soccer Laduma.

“Yes, they are third (on the log) but you cannot judge (whether they would challenge or not). I don’t think we’re half-way through the season yet.”

“So to judge them now would be premature but yes they are doing well and good luck to them. They are third, they are mixing with the teams they should have been mixing with for the last ten years,” he said of Chiefs, who last won the PSL in 2015.

What does the future hold for Chiefs?

“They are doing well now as far as I’m concerned but like I said, to judge them would be premature, because we’re not even half-way through the season but they are showing a lot of signs of positives on the ground and they must be happy with that.”

Chiefs had started the season like a house on fire, when they won four of their first five games, but they were pegged back by a loss and three straight draws although they were on a run of three victories on the bounce before the international break.

The Glamour Boys will begin their CAF Confederation Cup group stage campaign with an away clash to Egyptian side Al Masry on November 23 before a league trip to Magesi three days later.
