Sundowns coach Cardoso lists key changes PSL must implement

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has urged the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to implement several key changes he believes are essential for the development of South African football.

The Portuguese manager, who has been at the helm of the Brazilians for a season and a half, has already achieved significant success, including a league title and a notable CAF Champions League campaign.

Drawing on his experience, Cardoso has outlined specific reforms he feels would elevate the standard of play across the league.

His primary recommendations focus on standardising playing conditions. Cardoso advocates for the introduction of a single, official match ball for all league games, arguing it would allow players to adapt and perform more consistently.

The Sundowns coach also raised concerns about the practice of teams changing their designated home venues, particularly when facing larger clubs. He called for stricter regulations to ensure all teams compete under consistent conditions throughout the season.

Finally, Cardoso emphasised the importance of pitch maintenance, suggesting that the PSL should mandate specific standards for watering and grass length. He believes this would promote a faster, more fluid style of football, benefiting all teams.

Speaking on the Sundowns’ Pitchside Podcast, Cardoso detailed his vision for a more professional and competitive league.

What does Cardoso want changed?

“I feel that there are things that can be done to make football better,” he stated. “A simple example: why isn’t there an official match ball that everyone plays with? You will play better because you know the ball.”

“Why is it possible for teams to change venues just because they are playing Sundowns, Pirates, or Chiefs, when we should all be playing in the same conditions?” he questioned. “This is simple: ‘your venue is this one, and you cannot change it.'”

“You must water your pitches so that the football is quicker,” Cardoso added. “You have to play in those conditions because it’s mandatory to water the pitch and cut the grass. This is about the development of the game and the direction that South Africa must take. I would like the game to develop here.”
