Cassius Mailula: Is ex-Sundowns forward set for Bafana Bafana return?

Published on by

Cassius Mailula looks to have played his way into the plans of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos following reports that the tactician is set to recall him to the national team.

Mailula has been in great form for Moroccan giants Wyad Athletic Club, where he is currently on loan from MLS Club Toronto FC, scoring three goals and providing five assists in 23 matches this season.

His great form saw him named the club’s Player of the Month for January after coach Rulani Mokwena’s team put together a four-match winning run that has seen them move to second place on the table.

That is said to have convinced Broos to recall the forward to the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers where Bafana Bafana will host Lesotho on March 17 before playing away to Benin on March 24.

Mailula last played for Bafana in 2023

According to reports, Broos, through SAFA, has sent a letter to Wydad, signaling his intentions to have the 23-year-old included in the preliminary squad for the World Cup qualifiers.

It would be a great turnaround for the player, who last played for Bafana Bafana two years ago, while still at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mailula has made two national team appearances, being in March 2023 when South Africa played Liberia home and away in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, getting 10 minutes and then 22 respectively before he was named on the bench for Bafana Bafana’s clash with Morocco in June that year.

Broos looks to be living up to his promise of including the forward in his squad if he played consistently and displayed the great talents that saw him crowned PSL Young Player of the Year in the 2022-23 season.
