Kaizer Chiefs’ pre-season preparations in Spain have been dealt a blow, with defender Paseka Mako forced to return to South Africa after sustaining an injury.

The team, under the guidance of new coach Fernando da Cruz, is currently in Europe for an intensive training camp ahead of the new season.

Amakhosi have already faced Scottish side Rangers and Saudi Arabian club Al-Kholood in friendly matches, with both encounters ending in 1-1 draws.

However, the camp has been marred by a significant setback. Mako suffered a serious injury during the match against Al-Kholood, prompting his early departure from the tour.

Chiefs confirm Mako setback

“Defender Paseka Mako has suffered a setback after fracturing his forearm during Tuesday’s friendly match against Al-Kholood,” the club confirmed in a statement.

“Mako has returned to South Africa for medical care and will consult a specialist orthopaedic surgeon for further assessment. He is expected to rejoin his teammates in the coming weeks once his recovery is underway.”

Mako, who joined Chiefs last season in a notable move from arch-rivals Orlando Pirates alongside Thabiso Monyane, featured in 18 matches for the Glamour Boys across all competitions. He will be eager for a swift recovery to avoid disrupting his progress at the club.

Silver lining on dark clouds

Despite Mako’s injury, the club shared some positive news regarding other players. “On a brighter note, several players who ended last season on the injury list have resumed training and are eager to fight for selection under Da Cruz,” the statement continued.

“The team will be looking to end their tour of Spain on a high against La Liga side Elche CF on Saturday before heading back home.”

Upon their return, Chiefs are scheduled to play in the Toyota Cup against Scottland FC of Zimbabwe in Rustenburg on July 26, before kicking off their Betway Premiership campaign against newcomers Kruger United.

Mako’s injury adds to Chiefs’ troubles with striker Khanyisa Mayo set to miss at least two months of the new season after a hernia operation.
