Chiefs boost as Esperance breach Mokwana contract

Kaizer Chiefs might sign Elias Mokwana as soon as December following a breach of contract by his current team Esperance.

Mokwana joined the Tunisian heavyweights in the most recent transfer window despite heavy interest from the Glamour Boys. Esperance paid Premier Soccer League side Sekhukhune United around R7 million for Bafana Bafana international.

However, despite playing eight games for the North Africans, the 25-year-old has not been paid by the Tunisian outfit.

It explains why the South African might be leaving the club in the next couple of weeks for a breach of contract.

‘We will consider next step'

When reached for comment, Mokwana's attorney Kabelo Mashigo conceded Esperance have not paid his client, and soon a decision will be made on the next step.

“Much of the issues are confidential, but I can confirm that the club is in breach of the agreement. We provided them with notice to rectify the breach,” he told SABC Sport.

“They have not complied, leaving the player with no option but to accept the repudiation. Elias is focusing on the call-up now and once that is done, we will consider the next step,” Mashigo concluded.

Kaizer Chiefs are in the market for quality players to boost their squad. The winter transfer window in South Africa will be open in the next two months. However, he can join the Soweto giants any time if his contract with Esperance is terminated which in turn will render him a free agent.

Mokwana is with Bafana Bafana in Uganda for Group K's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier against the hosts at Namboole on Friday.
