Chiefs potential boost as transfer target misses move to Moroccan giants

South African clubs could get a chance to sign Bafana Bafana forward Elias Mokwana following reports that his potential transfer to Wydad Athletic Club has fallen through.

Mokwana was heavily linked to Wydad with his agent Pontsho Madumo stating that he was still sorting out some personal issues before deciding his next move although he hinted at a move abroad.

It later emerged that the said move was to the Moroccan giants but it has now collapsed after they failed to submit the necessary paperwork before their transfer window closed.

Why Wydad will find it hard to sign Mokwana

The 27-year-old winger, who is a free agent after his departure from Tunisian side Esperance Sportive de Tunis, was in advanced negotiations for a move to the Casablanca-based club. Discussions had progressed well earlier in the week, and the deal appeared imminent.

However, according to iDiski Times, the club missed the crucial deadline to register the player. Registering new signings outside the official window is notoriously complex, effectively halting the transfer.

This development comes amid reports from Morocco that Wydad had also recently pursued former Mamelodi Sundowns star Percy Tau, but the former Al Ahly forward reportedly turned down their offer.

Kaizer Chiefs and PSL clubs on alert

Mokwana’s future is now uncertain, though he is not short of options. Sources indicate that clubs in South Africa, Algeria, Egypt and Libya have already made contact regarding his availability.

Kaizer Chiefs are among the clubs heavily linked with Mokwana, who was on their transfer wish list in 2024 before he left Sekhukhune United for Esperance.

While Chiefs have a number of wingers on their books, Mokwana is still an attractive option based on his international experience and can help them in the CAF Confederation Cup and to challenge Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns in the league.

During his tenure with Esperance, Mokwana made 38 appearances, contributing seven goals and four assists. He spent the previous season on loan in the Saudi Pro League with Al Hazem.
