Kaizer Chiefs youth coach Vela Khumalo has shared his thoughts on the difficulties faced by two of the club’s development players, Samkelo Zwane and Happy Mashiane, during their loan spells.
Both players are currently with fellow Premier Soccer League side Siwelele FC but have found their opportunities on the pitch to be limited.
Khumalo believes that the high expectations placed upon the duo may be a contributing factor to why they have not yet made the anticipated impact.
“I expected these two players would get more chances at Siwelele FC, but it seems only Samkelo Zwane has had a bit of playtime,” Khumalo told KickOff. “I can’t pinpoint the exact reasons for their limited appearances.”

He added, “The initial expectations might have been a bit high, but I can’t definitively say they’ve failed to meet them, especially since I don’t know why they aren’t playing.”
The youth coach dismissed the idea that the players’ style of play could be the issue, emphasising the need for adaptability in modern football.
“As a footballer, you must be able to adapt and perform in any tactical system,” he went on. “A well-developed player should be able to play anywhere, anytime. You can’t be picky; players need to prove their worth to earn their spot, especially if they want to show the club it was a mistake to loan them out.”
Why are Zwane and Mashiane struggling?

Khumalo expressed his uncertainty about the situation, suggesting there might be more to it than meets the eye. “If these players aren’t involved in matches, there could be underlying issues we are not aware of. I don’t know whether to be disappointed or not, as I lack the full picture,” he explained.
Speaking on Happy Mashiane, Khumalo noted his potential but admitted his knowledge was limited. “I haven’t worked with him directly, but we saw his promising talent in CAF competitions. Beyond that, I’m not entirely sure. As for Samkelo Zwane, we had high hopes. He has talent, but talent alone isn’t enough to succeed as a professional.”
He concluded by contrasting their situation with that of other players he has coached. “It’s hard to draw firm conclusions since I haven’t worked closely with them. The players I have mentored are playing consistently every week, which is a sign of their development and readiness.”
