Chiefs defender slammed after loss in Angola – ‘More focused on playing that defending’

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has expressed his disappointment at the display of Aden McCarthy in Amakhosi’s 1-0 loss to Angolan side Kabuscorp SCP.

Chiefs started their CAF Confederation Cup on the wrong footing when they lost away to the Angolan club in the first preliminary round on Saturday.

The Glamour Boys started life without coach Nasreddine Nabi but his understudies Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze could not inspire the team to victory with a defensive mistake proving costly.

Young defender McCarthy was at fault for the goal and Khanye has hit out at the 21-year-old while also criticising the Chiefs technical bench for pairing him with captain Miguel Inacio who he thinks are not a good partnership in central defence.

“Very disappointed by this boy McCarthy. His positioning,” he said on iDiski TV. “He got the ball. He’s more focused of playing than his priority which is defending.”

Khanye wants the Chiefs coaches to use players who complement each other as he feels wrong partnerships in key areas of the pitch are messing them up.

“They [Chiefs technical] are playing too many players that are not complementing each other,” added the former Chiefs forward.

“Aden McCarthy and [Inacio] Miguel. I don’t think they complement each other when it comes to defending. Look at the goal. Poor! Very poor.

“This boy Aden ball watching as the ball travelled all the way and he’s just looking at the ball and there’s somebody behind him; they finish it’s a goal.”

Chiefs have it all to do in the return match at FNB Stadium on Saturday September 27 as they are in a position where they must win by at least two goals to avoid an early elimination from the continental competition.

That will be after a tricky match against Marumo Gallants on Wednesday which will test them to the limit and it remains to be seen how McCarthy will perform if he continues to partner Miguel now that he is a man under the spotlight.
