Chiefs face strong Appollis’ competition as Sundowns join race? Mngqithi weighs in

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has disclosed the club's position regarding the potential acquisition of Oswin Appollis, a target for Kaizer Chiefs.

The services of the Polokwane City winger have been sought by multiple clubs including Esperance, MC Alger, Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

Recently, it appears that the Tshwane giants have entered the race for the Bafana Bafana player.

Speaking after the match against SuperSport United on Tuesday night, Mngqithi candidly expressed his desire to have Appollis in his squad.

Nevertheless, he also voiced concerns regarding the large number of players already at Sundowns, which complicates management of the team.

MNGQITHI ON WHETHER SUNDOWNS ARE INTERESTED IN APPOLLIS

“I would love to get any of the top players to be honest, and Appollis is one of the players that I like – but many coaches would say the same thing; you don't always get what you want in life, because we already have around 40 players,” Mngqithi explained.

“But it will be important to get a player like that, if ever the opportunity avails itself.

“But I don't think it will avail itself because I know Esperance was interested in him and they couldn't get hold of him.

“So, at this stage I would not want to talk much about [it]. It's immaterial for me.”

Appollis was poised to switch to MC Alger before the end of the transfer window, however, the move fell through after the club had disagreements in the transfer fee.

Algeria’s transfer window closed on last Tuesday when Appollis was in the international duty with Bafana Bafana in South Sudan.

Meanwhile, Appollis was absent in the Polokwane’s Betway Premiership opener against AmaZulu FC last Wednesday.

Polokwane coach Phuti Mohafe indicated that the player was given a rest following his return from national duty.

“Oswin is alive, Oswin is here,” said Mohafe.

“He didn’t play, he was in the national team. So we have to rest him, we need him more going forward.”
