Kaizer Chiefs legend explains why Orlando Pirates deserve to be PSL champions

AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane has given reasons why he believes Orlando Pirates deserve to win the PSL title.

Pirates are one win away from dislodging Mamelodi Sundowns as the top team in South Africa after the Brazilians ended their season with a 3-2 loss to TS Galaxy on Tuesday, a defeat that left them on 68 points, three more than Pirates, who have two matches still to play and a goal difference of +8 over them.

With Durban City set to visit Pirates at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday, Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side can all but confirm the title if they secure maximum points.

Zwane, whose team lost 3-0 at Pirates and were beaten 2-0 at home by the Buccaneers, fears for Durban City but feels it is as a result of Pirates’ ratelessness in the last three years.

“Anything might happen but there in Orlando (laughs)…Sometimes you have got to give credit where it is due. That place [Orlando Stadium], if people go there and get five, get six, we got three there my guy,” Zwane told reporters.

“That team is at a different level. Take that same team to three years ago. You could see it coming. They have been knocking so when you look at football, we needed that competition in football.”

The Kaizer Chiefs legend has saluted Pirates for challenging the status quo in the PSL, comparing it to what is being witnessed in the English Premier League, where Arsenal are two wins away from a first title in 22 years, having finished second in the last three seasons.

“And for them to push the way they have pushed, at some point it deserves something. They have been number two, number two, they have been coming,” he added.

“What you see [in the PSL] is what you see in England today. Personally, I don’t support Arsenal but I will tell you, for the coach in terms of the effort and the team…they have been pushing City, for competition and for football, Arsenal must win it.

“It is just that here in the PSL, I cannot say so and so must win it because now I am the coach and I should be fighting for those honours, but when you look at the amount of work and for the fact that they have been knocking,” the former Chiefs coach further stated.
