Kaizer Chiefs legend accepts Bafana job as a ‘side hustle’

AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane is reportedly on the verge of being appointed as Pitso Mosimane’s second assistant at Bafana Bafana.

Following his appointment as the new Bafana Bafana head coach earlier this month, replacing Hugo Broos, Mosimane has been actively assembling his backroom staff. He has already brought in his trusted colleagues, analyst Musi Matlaba and fitness coach Kabelo Rangoaga.

The technical team was further strengthened with the addition of Morena Ramoreboli as the first assistant coach. Ramoreboli recently stepped down from his position as the head coach of the Botswana national team to join Mosimane’s setup.

According to KickOff, Zwane is set to join the national team on a part-time basis with the proposed arrangement allowing him to continue his duties as AmaZulu’s head coach while also serving as Mosimane’s second assistant.

Zwane lauded for developing young players

His responsibilities would also include overseeing the U23 squad to help create a smoother pathway for young players into the senior national team.

“Zwane was one of the most successful candidates after the interviews with SAFA. For now, he is expected to work with Bafana Bafana as assistant coach on a part-time basis,” KickOff quoted a source.

Zwane has a well-established reputation for developing young talent. His success at AmaZulu has been largely attributed to his ability to nurture emerging players and prepare them for the rigours of professional football.

His coaching journey began in the youth structures of Kaizer Chiefs, where he was instrumental in developing several players who have since secured moves to European clubs or become established senior professionals.

If the appointment is confirmed, it will mark Zwane’s return to the Bafana Bafana fold. He previously served as an assistant to the current technical director, Molefe Ntseki.

Mosimane takes charge of a team with high expectations. His predecessor, Hugo Broos, led the team to consecutive continental tournaments and a historic Round of 32 appearance at the World Cup, and the pressure is now on the new coach to build on that success.

Mosimane’s tenure will kick off with a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea at Orlando Amstel Arena on September 26.

This will be followed by a match against Eritrea at the neutral Al Salam Stadium in Cairo four days later. The international break will conclude with a friendly against Egypt at Cairo International Stadium on October 4.
