‘Chiefs made Nabi mistake, they could have appointed Pitso’ – Former Amakhosi winger claims

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye insists the Glamour Boys made a mistake by overlooking Pitso Mosimane in favour of Nasreddine Nabi.

The Soweto giants were determined to get a new coach after Molefi Ntseki and Cavin Johnson failed to help Amakhosi deliver in the 2023/24 campaign. The former started as the main man before being fired just 13 matches into the campaign, and the latter struggled to lift the team.

Mosimane was a free agent after his deal with Abha concluded, and was willing to take over at Chiefs.

However, the management lured Nabi from the Botola Pro League where he was coaching AS FAR Rabat to Naturena. He was seen as the tactician who can help Chiefs get back to their former best, a move that Khanye has faulted.

Mosimane is a winner and loves challenges

I saw during the off-season when Nabi took the team to Turkey for training; that’s an old-fashioned way of doing things,” he told the Sunday World.

“He should have arranged to play a few friendly matches so that he could see his players and to work on combinations. That was going to show him what he had and where he lacked. The players he has are not good enough and they have been there for the last five years or so.

“Playing friendly matches was going to help him sign players that he wants. But now, even if the club gave him money, he is going to bring players that he wants and not players who can fit into the Chiefs identity and way of playing. Pitso was a free agent, and we all know his record. The Mamelodi Sundowns we are seeing today is because of Pitso’s hard work and vision. The Chiefs project is the kind of assignment that brings the best out of him.

“He loves challenges because he is a winner. So, if you look at the current results and league table, Chiefs made a mistake by bringing Nabi,” Khanye concluded.

As Nabi's struggles continue at Chiefs, it seems Mosimane's Esteghlal are starting to reap from his services. They are unbeaten in their last seven games across all competitions.
