Kaizer Chiefs Transfer News: Amakhosi warned about star

Stellenbosch winger Langelihle Phili has been heavily linked with a move to Premier Soccer League heavyweights Kaizer Chiefs.

The 21-year-old was one of the star players for the Maroons last season, and he had an assist and nine goals in 39 outings for Stellies. Seven of the goals and that single assist were in 27 league fixtures.

Reports have it that the Soweto giamts were willing to include two players and cash for the attacker who they feel will help in strengthening their squad. Amakhosi are set to compete in the CAF Confederation Cup as well after finishing third in the PSL last edition.

Football stakeholder and legend Mlungisi Ngubane, who is commonly referred to as Professor, is not convinced that Amakhosi are headed in the right direction. He has further argued that the winger might not even fit in the Chiefs’ system.

“Sometimes Chiefs do not recognise their own quality. He may be a good player, but not suited for Chiefs,” notes the former dribbling wizard, speaking to KickOff.

“How many players from Stellenbosch have failed at Chiefs? This is often because Stellenbosch players operate in a pressure-free environment. At Stellenbosch, there is no criticism or shouting from fans if performances are not good. However, at Chiefs, there is an expectation to deliver consistently.

“At Chiefs, the focus is on entertainment and goal-scoring. I am not suggesting Phili is not a good player, but I doubt he is suitable for Chiefs. I am curious about what the club saw in him to be so eager to sign him.

“They should learn from Orlando Pirates, who tend to sign players who fit their style of play. What has Phili done to warrant being lured with two highly skilled players plus additional cash? I watched his games last season, and there was nothing extraordinary that would justify such interest. It is too early to judge his potential,” Professor concluded.
