Kaizer Chiefs reject inflicts pain on Amakhosi to give Arthur Zwane CAF hopes

Kaizer Chiefs saw their seven-game unbeaten run come to and end following a 2-0 defeat away to Siwelele FC on Wednesday.

Chiefs, who were riding high after winning five and drawing two of their previous seven matches, including a great performance in the Soweto Derby on Sunday, met their waterloo and it was one of their former players who led the onslaught.

It took Siwelele just six minutes to find the breakthrough when former Chiefs star Tebogo Potsane scored after completing a brilliant team move.

Siwelele had started with great intensity and got easily behind the Chiefs defence with Siphesihle Jeza scoring after five minutes and seeing his effort ruled out for offside after Amakhosi goalkeeper Brandon Petersen had made a mess of the ball.

However, a minute later, the home side were celebrating. Against the run of play, Jeza received the ball and made a run into the box, firing at goal and drawing a good save from Petersen but from the rebound, Potsane hammered home from close range and celebrated against his ex-side.

Two minutes later, Thabiso Monyane saw his well-taken shot take a wicked deflected before Siwelele goalkeeper Ricardo Goss kept it out and in the 20th minute, the former Orlando Pirates star nearly created the equaliser when his brilliant cross in the box was met by Glody Lilepo, who somehow failed to find the target.

Siwelele would score the second goal after 26 minutes, Potsane heavily involved again as he started the move on the counterattack before passing to Ghampani Lungu who found Jeza free and the youngster fired past Petersen for his first goal of the season.

Siwele continued troubling Chiefs in the second half although Amakhosi also had their opportunities with Lilepo letting fly from distance and seeing Goss dive brilliantly to deny him in the 75th minute while substitute Inacio Miguel failed to head home after winning the ball in the air from Mfundo Vilakazi’s corner nine minutes from time.

The Bloemfontein-based club held on to secure maximum points, slowing Chiefs run to the CAF Confederation Cup, while boosting their own top eight hopes.

Chiefs remain third on the table with 47 points from 26 games, five more than fourth-placed AmaZulu FC, and must now be watchful in the final four matches of the season if they want to stay there and seal CAF Confederation Cup qualification.
