Cupido responds to World Cup calls – ‘Up to the coach’

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Keanu Cupido has responded to the Bafana Bafana talk after he was backed by coach Miguel Cardoso to earn a place in South Africa’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“It’s up to the coach to choose the team, if I do get chosen, I would be honoured, and if I don’t, I’d also be happy for the other guys that are going to the World Cup,” Cupido said.

“As a country there’s a lot of talent, if I do get an opportunity, I’d be really honoured to represent the national team.”

Ex-Pirates coach warns Sundowns about AS FAR

Raja Club Athletic coach Fadlu Davids has sent a warning to Mamelodi Sundownsahead of their second leg CAF Champions League final tie this coming weekend against ASFAR.

“I think they are an experienced team that has played together for a long time. Yes, their coach joined them only at the beginning of last season, I think, but the players were together before that,” Davids told iDiski Times.

“We competed with them for the league when we won the double [two seasons ago]. They were on top of the log the whole season, and we came to win it – we went on top with two matches left.

“That was the season when [Nasreddine] Nabi was the coach. They’ve had that same team last season, and they’ve got the same team this season. They’ve made even some better signings to add on top. They are a well-structured team.

“It’s not going to be easy for Sundowns just to walk over them. But I think away from home, Sundowns will just have to manage the results because playing here in front of their fans is very intimidating. They can be loud.

“They can make it a very hostile situation. Playing in their home ground, in front of their fans, can be extremely hostile, extremely intimidating for the players.”

Leon rated

Benedict Vilakazi and Junior Khanye have reacted to Mamelodi Sundowns striker Brayan Leon’s performance in the 1st leg of the Champions League final against ASFAR on Sunday.

“I think it’s one of those games where you can play good, but you fail to score,” said Tso on iDiski TV.

“He made good runs found himself in good positions, but he couldn’t convert and I hope maybe he’s saving these two for next week.

“He definitely owes them an away goal he needs to make sure he buries such chances next week because as a top striker everyone relies on him. And if he misses, you leave us with no hope to say who’s going to come in and do it for us. But he did very well,” he concluded.

Meanwhile Khanye agrees with Tso that Leon had a good game however should have made different choices with his final touches.

“Leon is a top striker for me, one of the best he knows football and he understands his teammates,” said Khanye.

“He also understands his primary job, but I expected more from him especially that ball he shot wide and missed the target.

“I thought he’d hit it with the outside of his foot or his weaker foot but he’s a top striker. He’ll learn because playing in the final of the CAF Champions League is not easy.”
