Chiefs share spoils with AS Simba in CAF Confederation Cup duel

Kaizer Chiefs and AS Simba have played to a goalless draw in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round staged at the TP Mazembe Stadium on Saturday.

The Glamour Boys made it to the second preliminary round after going past Angolan side Kabuscorp in the previous one. The game ended 1-1 in aggregate but the Soweto giants claimed a 5-4 win in the penalty shootout to seal progress.

The Congolese side secured a 3-0 aggregate win over Djabal from Comoros to continue their journey in Africa's second tier competition.

Co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef were definitely excited to have the likes of experienced duo Lebohang Maboe and Khanyisa Mayo in the team. Howeer, it was the latter who was included in the team.

Spoils shared in Congo

The first half turned out to be a cagey affair, as both teams resorted to cautious play with none wishing to concede.

However, it was the Soweto giants who had better chances to put the ball in the back of the net, but they did not capitalise on them. The debutants also pushed to get a vital opener, but the first half ended with neither team scoring.

Even after the break, the teams just couldn't find a way of penetrating each other's defences and spoils were eventually shared.

Advantage Chiefs?

The Glamour Boys are now hoping to complete the job at home against the Congolese side.

“The return leg will be hosted at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Sunday, 26 October. With home advantage, Chiefs will look to seal their spot in the group stages of this season’s competition,” Amakhosi confirmed the venue in a statement.

A win of any kind for the Soweto giants will be enough for them to advance while a scoring draw or a win for the visitors will be enough.
