Chiefs, Sundowns or Pirates? Broos picks who are ‘very good now’

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has commented on the form of the top three teams in the country Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

The trio are considered title contenders at the start of every season although Sundowns have remained dominant in the last nine years with Pirates playing second fiddle in each of the last three campaigns as Chiefs continue to struggle.

This season, the three teams have started the season in contrasting fashion with Sundowns not dominating over their opponents while Chiefs’ early season fire has cooled following a three-match winless run in the PSL as Pirates have picked up form after an initial struggle.

While assessing the three teams, Broos maintained that Chiefs are still far from a good team with Sundowns showing signs of struggle but he is impressed by Pirates.

“People will be angry with me, but Kaizer Chiefs didn’t play a good game and Orlando Pirates are very good now and no more Mamelodi Sundowns dominance,” Broos said when he unveiled his squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda.

“Maybe the people will again be angry with me, but I was yesterday at Chiefs, and Chiefs did not play a good game. Maybe I am different in evaluating games than you are, but I can’t say I saw a good game yesterday,” added the Bafana coach, who was at the FNB Stadium as Chiefs played out a 1-1 draw with AmaZulu on Wednesday.

“I want to see more games that have fighting and it is difficult. For the moment, you also don’t see the dominance of Sundowns anymore. You see that Pirates are very good now, they have a good pool of players,” he said.

Pirates have been formidable so far, winning their last nine matches in all competitions, to move to third place on the table with 15 points, six behind leaders Sundowns, who have played three games more, while the PSL champions have dropped points against four midtable sides in just 10 games which is unlike them.
