Cape Town Spurs winger Asanele Velebayi has not hidden his desire to test himself at a higher level amid interest from Kaizer Chiefs.
Velebayi was strongly linked with a move to Chiefs in the off-season but a deal did not materialise after both clubs failed to agree on the terms of the transfer and Spurs reacted by handing him the captain’s armband.
Even with a move to the Glamour Boys falling through, the young attacker is still determined to do well and seal a move to one of the top teams in South Africa as well as a place in the Bafana Bafana squad.
Velebayi encouraged by Dortley & Mofokeng’s rise
“My peers, the likes of [Rushwin] Dortley, have done well. I don’t see what will stop me from reaching those levels or surpassing them,” the 21-year-old told FARPost.
“At the moment, I’m focused on my job at Cape Town Spurs, but that does not mean I don’t think about the future.
“What I just avoid is losing focus and affecting my game. I can only pray that we emerge successful as a team.
“As an individual, my aim is to break into Bafana Bafana. Seeing Dortley [Rushwin] and Relebohile Mofokeng makes me feel that as youngsters, we are not far.”
Will the winger seal dream move to Kaizer Chiefs?
Velebayi has spoken of feeling a little ‘jealous’ that some of his peers are already established at big teams, and also playing for the national team, while he is still stuck in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, but he is not losing hope.
“I believe that is a big platform for me. We all want to rise, but it’s a process. As a player, the goal is to grow and be a Bafana player. But when interests from bigger teams come, we must be able to deal with the level of attention,” he added.
“I envy what they [Mofokeng and Dortley] are doing at club and national team, and it is something that I also hope to do.”
The winger has so far managed two goals in 10 league games for his side but he will be hoping to impress even further with reports claiming that Orlando Pirates are also interested.
