Despondent Mamelodi Sundowns will visit high-flying Kaizer Chiefs in the Betway Premiership match in the midweek in what promises to be a spectacle to behold.
This marks the third match of the 2025/26 season for both teams, who are looking to establish their dominance and set their sights on the league title, even in these early stages.
RECENT RESULTS
Following their recent MTN8 final loss to Orlando Pirates, the Masandawana are hungry for a win. After a 2-2 aggregate draw, they were defeated 4-1 in a penalty shootout, making this upcoming game a prime opportunity for redemption.
While their league start was shaky with a draw against Chippa United, they've since found their footing with two consecutive wins against AmaZulu and Magesi FC.
Currently sitting third in the league with nine points from three matches, the defending champions are eager to climb the table.
Meanwhile, a well-rested Chiefs poses a significant threat. Having finished outside the top eight last season, they didn't participate in the MTN8.
They've capitalised on their rest, winning all three of their opening league matches against Stellenbosch FC, Polokwane City, and Richards Bay FC. Chiefs are currently second on the table with nine points, making this a pivotal match for both teams.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
The rivalry between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns was intense last season, with Sundowns dominating their head-to-head encounters.
Masandawana secured victories in three of their four meetings. They were particularly successful in the league, winning both matches with scores of 2-1 and 1-0. Their dominance continued in the Carling Knockout Cup, where they delivered a crushing 4-0 defeat to their rivals in the quarterfinal.
However, Amakhosi had the last laugh. In a surprising turn of events, they upset Sundowns with a 2-1 victory in the Nedbank Cup semi-final. This win was a pivotal moment for Chiefs, as it propelled them to clinch the trophy and end their decade-long trophy drought in spectacular fashion. This season’s clashes are sure to be just as dramatic.
Chiefs assistant coach Cedric Kaze said they have kept it in mind that they will be facing an eight-time league champions and won’t be taking the clash for granted.

WHAT CHIEFS COACH SAID ABOUT FACING SUNDOWNS
“At the end of the day, you have to perform well and do your job on the pitch; the context or the circumstances of the opponent does not matter,” said Kaze.
“We do need to keep in mind that we are going up against the eight-time defending champions, and we have told our players not to rely on the outside noise surrounding Sundowns.”
