John Comitis has shared why a league win for either of the Soweto giants is badly needed
Cape Town City chairman John Comitis feels Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs represent greater value if they win the PSL title as opposed to Mamelodi Sundowns.
Sundowns have been dominant in the PSL, winning the last seven straight titles, with Pirates playing second fiddle in the last two seasons, while Chiefs have kept struggling and finished a disappointing 10th in 2023-24.
However, the Cape Town City boss insists the PSL would be at a great place if either of the Soweto giants were the ones winning the league as they are a huge draw to sponsors.
Pirates and Chiefs bigger brands than Sundowns?
“The PSL platform exposes a brand to a multimillion fanbase and corporates are not capitalising on this,” Comitis said on Sports Night Amplified with Andile.
“It’s important that Chiefs or Pirates win the league soon because that is good for business.”
Comitis says the rest of the PSL clubs are left at a disadvantage when it is not either Pirates or Chiefs at the top of the tree and he would love the two of them to challenge for the PSL crown soon.
“To me, and I know I’m speaking against myself, but when Chiefs and Pirates isn’t up there, we [City] can feel the down, as a team that is not Chiefs or Pirates,” he added.
Buccaneers seen as the Brazilians’ main challengers
“When Chiefs and Pirates are winning, the stadiums are full and it’s a snowball effect.”
Comitis will be hoping that his desires are realised this season as Pirates are seen as the team most capable of challenging Sundowns in the PSL.
Chiefs, meanwhile, are in a rebuilding phase under new coach Nasreddine Nabi and still far from title contenders.
Pirates last won the PSL in 2012 while Chiefs’ final title was claimed in 2015, showing how frustrating it has been for fans of the two South African giants.
