Former South Africa coach Augusto Palacios has stood firm against critics who questioned Lyle Foster’s loyalty and patriotism.
The striker missed out the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) edition owing to mental condition but Bafana Bafana did well to secure Bronze in Ivory Coast. The Elephants won the crown as the Super Eagles of Nigeria finished second.
Upon his return to the national team, the Burnley star played a role in helping the nation qualify for both the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as well as the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
On Monday, he assisted and scored as Mzansi beat Angola 2-1 in Group B assignment staged at the Marrakesh Stadium.
Well done Foster!

Palacios, who coached Foster as a youngster, has since told off all who doubted the forward, insisting he has proven them wrong with his performances.
“Sometimes people criticize and put the players’ morale down. It is happening with Lyle Foster. When everyone played for the country last night, he contributed to the win,” he opened up to Kick Off.
“He never complained or answered negatively. It’s important to support every player, scoring or not scoring, performing or not performing. Players are not doing stuff on purpose. All players try their best.
“It’s very important to motivate everyone because the country is important. Well done, Lyle. Continue playing and representing South Africa,” the 74-year-old continued.
Foster never snubbed last AFCON

“The team is well balanced and united. The coach trusts him. The problem was that when he was sick mentally, the club gave him his full support to recover. He never ever refused to play for his country. But it’s a different opinion that I respect, and comments that affect the family and him. He is strong to continue his football. The support from his teammates, technical team, and SAFA is always great,” Palacios added.
“He never snubbed the last AFCON. Never ever. It was circumstances that were out of his control. Check one player from Zimbabwe resigned in this AFCON for family personal problem. Their association understands this happens all over, but not refused.
“When a person is sick in different aspects, it must be respected, especially when the team doctor and club send a letter to know the condition of the players. Remember, 11 play in the field, not one player. But I say every comment I respect, and knowing the situation of each player or person is important. I’m not saying this because he scored no. I’m talking about the whole situation for any players,” he concluded.
