Daniel Dhliwayo: PSL to honour departed ex-Pirates boss

The PSL will honour former Orlando Pirates chairman Daniel “DD” Donald Dhliwayo during this week’s matches following his death on May 1.

Dhliwayo’s family confirmed his death, saying he passed away following a short illness, just a few months to his 99th birthday.

“The death has come as a shock to the family. He had been suffering from pneumonia and was in the intensive care unit for about six weeks,” his son Kutlwano Dhliwayo told Sunday World.

“He was starting to get better; he gave us hope, and then around 11pm last week Thursday, he left us.”

The educator leaves behind a remarkable legacy having played a major role in shaping Pirates into the giant club that they are during his stint as deputy chairman and then chairman in the 1970s.

Dhliwayo is credited with sourcing sponsorships for the Buccaneers which helped lay a strong foundation for the club before they went on to dominate South African and African football.

Following his death, the PSL has announced that there will be a moment of silence in his hanour before all Betway Premiership, Motsepe Foundation Championship and Nedbank Cup matches this week.

“The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is deeply saddened by the passing of former Orlando Pirates Football Club Chairman, Mr Daniel Donald Dhliwayo,” the PSL said via a statement.

“The PSL extends heartfelt condolences to the Dhliwayo family during this difficult time. A moment of silence will be observed in his honour at all Betway Premiership, Motsepe Foundation Championship, and Nedbank Cup fixtures this week.”
