WAFCON 2025: Date set for South Africa possible big announcement

SAFA has revealed when the country will learn its host status fate for the women’s tournament

South Africa will on September 16 learn if they will be the host nation for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

SAFA submitted a bid to host next year’s tournament, after it was moved to 2024 from this year when Morocco was to host it again, after doing the same in 2022.

Danny Jordaan, SAFA president, said the country’s bid has the backing of the Minister for Sports, Arts, and Culture Gayton McKenzie.

“As far as the Minister is concerned, we will continue to work with him. We are busy talking to him on two projects – one, the WAFCON,” Jordaan told SABC.

“CAF will take a decision at the next Executive Meeting around the 16th of September, and we hope South Africa will be given the rights to host the WAFCON because we are the African champions also.

“So, it’s a huge opportunity for us, and we hope to convince CAF to give us the opportunity – the Minister is supporting that programme.”

When will WAFCON 2025 be held?

South Africa are the defending champions of the tournament after Banyana Banyana beat Morocco at the 2022 final to win their maiden title and are looking to defend their crown on home soil.

The 21-day tournament will be held from July 5-26, 2025 and the decision on who will host it will come after a period of uncertainty following the completion of the qualifiers.

Teams qualified for the tournament last December hoping to play in July this year in Morocco but the event was postponed to avoid a clash with the Paris Olympics, decision that did not go down well with all teams.
