Outgoing Riveiro on what makes Soweto derby ‘unique’

Outgoing Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has spoken highly of the Soweto derby, explaining what sets it apart from other derbies.

In a thrilling Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium, Buccaneers overcame 10-man Kaizer Chiefs 2-1, completing a Betway Premiership double over their rivals.

Glody Lilepo scored the opener for Amakhosi, with Evidence Makgopa equalizing for the Sea Robbers in the first half. Relebohile Mofokeng then netted the winner for Pirates.

Adding a unique perspective on the derby, Pirates coach Jose Riveiro noted the special nature of the fixture, where fans from both sides can sit together and enjoy the spectacle without incident.

RIVEIRO SAYS SOWETO DERBY IS A SPECIAL OCCASION

“Something unique, it’s something unique wherever I go it’s going to be difficult to experience something like this because it’s a proper football party. Hopefully, I have the opportunity to play more derbies wherever I have the opportunity to work,” he added.

“But this one is unique having the fans watching the game together no problems celebrating you know what these clubs are – the proper history of South African football and it’s something unique that you have to protect forever and something that really.

“I always try to explain to people on the other side of the world what it means to play this game. They don’t understand it until they come so hopefully more people they come because it’s a proper show.”

Pirates are next in action in the league against Lamontville Golden Arrows on Tuesday, 6 May at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

They will then renew rivalry with Chiefs on Saturday, 10 May in the Nedbank Cup final at the same venues.
