Did Kaizer Chiefs make Billiat mistake? Attacker tipped to break record

The experienced attacker has been in good form for the Miracle Boys, scoring five goals in the last six games.

Former Kaizer Chiefs attacker Khama Billiat did not have a good Premier Soccer League exit as he may have anticipated.

The now 33-year-old started his South Africa tenure with Ajax Cape Town from 2010 to 2013 before Mamelodi Sundowns snapped him. The Zimbabwean struggled to make an impact at Amakhosi in the five years he played for them.

When his contract expired, the Glamour Boys wanted to reduce his salary, but Billiat refused since he felt it was too low.

Billiat gets his mojo at home

During his tenure in South Africa, Billiat won the Caf Champions League, Caf Super Cup, three Premier Soccer League crowns, Nedbank Cup, and other domestic crowns. However, after the Amakhosi struggles, some critics felt the attacker was done.

At Yadah, Billiat is ticking all the right boxes; he has scored nine goals in the 21 rounds which has helped the Miracle Boys to their current ninth position on the table in the ongoing Zimbabwe Premier League season.

It explains why his coach Thomas Ruzive believes the former international can break a long-standing record of more than 20 goals a season. The last player to achieve the fete was the late Norman Maroto who found the back of the net 22 times while turning for the now-defunct Gunners FC.

“As a coach, I am giving him [Billiat] the target of being the top goal scorer come the end of the season. And I think he can get to 20 goals,” he told the media.

Billiat is in the race to win the Golden Boot alongside William Manondo of Caps United; they both have nine goals with 13 rounds remaining to conclude the campaign.
